Bump caps are often designed in the shape of a baseball cap and offer protection against bumps, tears and abrasions from hard, stationary objects that you may come into contact with. These can be low ceilings, overhead pipes, and hanging objects. Bump caps are often used in environments where there is no danger of falling objects. If the risk analysis identifies hitting the head against stationary objects as a potential hazard, a bump cap may be the right choice.

The bump cap is becoming an increasingly popular element of workers' uniforms because it is available in many styles and materials and workers in all types of industries find it a comfortable option. The degree of protection provided by a bump cap is described in the European standard EN 812:2012.
